A Guide to Powder Coating Alloys

Are you thinking of getting your alloys completely refurbished? Powder Coating is a method which can prevent potential damage, as well as providing the opportunity to personalise the look and feel of your wheels. At East Coast Coatings, we know everything there is to know about alloy refurbishment. Powder Coating is one of our favourite and most popular techniques!

-What is Powder Coating?

Powder coating wheels can provide not only a stunning finish but one that is highly durable and increases the wheels’ lifespan. It is a decorative finish for alloy wheels. Sprayed on like a traditional paint, it is not until the coating is heated that the paint “flows out” of the coating and forms a gel over the surface of the wheel. Its tough properties provide defence from corrosion, heat, scratches, general wear and tear and severe weather conditions.

-How to Powder Coat wheels

The obvious first step of the process is to detach the wheels and remove the tyre. It is recommended to get your tyres rebalanced when they are replaced. The wheels are then manually cleaned and degreased in preparation for the coating process. Following this, a compressed air sprayer is required to electrostatically charge the powder – this bonds the coating to the wheels.

Make sure you don’t allow anything to come into contact with the powder coating, as this could cause part of it to fall off the wheel. The next stage is curing the wheel. This is carried out via a specialised, industrial powder coating oven. This process ensures that the coating is evenly distributed throughout the entire wheel. The wheels are also automatically subjected to a further thermal treatment .The lacquer coat is not only applied to enhance the finish but to protect the alloy wheel against environmental influences (UV radiation, salt, moisture, dirt, etc.) at all points.
